LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Governor Newsom signing an Executive Order to protect California’s clean air, Attorney General Bonta suing the Trump administration for overreach of federal power, and on Senator Padilla’s forced removal at a Department of Homeland Security press conference.
Statement from Mike Young, Executive Director, California Environmental Voters:
“California is under attack — not just our climate leadership, but our rights, our values, and even our voices. The role of the government is to protect people, our health, our rights, and our future, and right now we’re not seeing that from the President. Instead, we’re seeing chaos and cruelty, from stripping our clean air authority to denying disaster aid to the Angelenos who are still struggling to rebuild after January’s fires.
As Trump moves to revoke our clean air waivers through a blatantly illegitimate process, we’re grateful Governor Newsom signed an executive order doubling down on the state’s efforts to clean our air and protect public health. Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta are standing up to defend California’s sovereignty and the right of states to protect our people by filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration to end the illegal and unnecessary move to federalize the California National Guard. Meanwhile, the shocking forced removal of Senator Alex Padilla for asking a question at a public press conference is a chilling assault of his First Amendment rights and an attack on democracy. Make no mistake: this is political theater designed to sow fear and intimidation.
California is the fourth-largest economy in the world. We’re a donor state that gives more to the federal government than we get back. And still, we’re being punished for protecting our communities, but California will not be intimidated. We will continue to lead and live our values, no matter who’s in the White House.”
